Difference #2: Newspapers
The internet may be the giant asteroid that eventually kills newspapers the same way it supposedly killed the dinosaurs. But you would not reach that conclusion living in London. There are at least 10 major daily publications in wide circulation. Compare that to our home city of SF that publishes one meager excuse for a paper.
Because of the competition for readership here, and the lack of ‘home delivery’ the papers resort to more sensational tactics to attract readers at the newstands (and thus advertisers). For instance, take this cover from yesterday’s Metro (a free publication widely read on the commuting trains). That type size in the US would indicate the start of World War III. I fear the day that there is real news - will the headline even fit? Other treats include a topless girl photo in every issue of The Sun. Oh, and that’s the most widely read paper in the UK.
Fortunately, the sports section is easy to find. It is always on the back cover and works backwards into the paper.
