Last year: football season tickets :: This year: own the whole team
The economy may be sinking, but I always save money for critical purchases like food, shelter, and buying a professional sports team.
I took my first steps into this rarefied world of professional sports ownership a few weeks ago. Unlike Mark Cuban, I did not have to sell a company for a few billion to afford it.
Thanks to myfootballclub.co.uk I am now a minority owner of the Ebbsfleet United Football Club. As an owner, I can vote on the line-up for each game, decide which players to buy and sell (see our earlier entry about football economics), set ticket prices, and approve financial decisions. My ownership stake cost about the same as one of my tickets to see Fulham play last year - 35 GBP. And with the ability to actually set the line-up, this offer far exceeds the US-based public ownership sports teams like the Packers. If their fans had these rights, Bret Favre would still be in cheese country.
Plus this is probably a better investment than the stock market these days. It’s definitely more fun.
